VOLUNTEER: Support at Risk Students

C.L.I.M.B.
Free After-School Program for Underserved Students
1 Day a week for 2 hours, Volunteers offer homework assistance, creative arts, games, character building, healthy snacks, and mentoring to children and youth for families living at the East McKinney Merritt Apartments operated by the Mckinney Housing Authority.
MISD – REACH Student Mentoring
REACH is a campus-based mentoring program
Started in 2006, the REACH program is designed to foster a basic sense of self-esteem, self-confidence, and motivation to learn and improve personal and social skills that will reinforce the importance of an education. The primary mission of the program is to reach one child at a time.

According to MISD and the McKinney Vento Definition of Homelessness in the 2023-2024 school year MISD identified 644 students as homeless; 518 Active, 121 Inactive and 5 students graduated. View community resources for basic needs here.

This MISD Facebook group was created by parents. MISD and Imagine Teachers post their Amazon wishlists then parents, community members & business show them some love by gifting them items on their list that are directly sent to them.

Donate to MISD Classroom Grants & College Scholarships
The McKinney Education Foundation offers college scholarships to McKinney ISD students and awards classroom grants to teachers and staff to enhance the quality of education.
Awarding Grants To Teachers And Staff Directly Impacts The Quality Of Education In McKinney. The Grants Give Teachers The Freedom To Implement Innovative Ideas That Otherwise Would Go Unfunded.

MISD has 9 Title 1 Schools: Press, Webb, Finch, McGowen, Vega, Caldwell, Slaughter, McNeil, Burks, Malvern Elementary School and Lawson Early Childhood.
What is a Title 1 School?
Title 1 is federal program that supports low-income students. It is a designation based on the number of low-income students who are considered at-risk for school achievement. To be considered a Title 1 school, a minimum of 40% of the students must qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Communities In Schools
Communities In Schools (CIS) is a non-profit organization that works within MISD schools with the aim of helping at-risk students stay in school. CIS helps with basic needs including clothing, food, life skills, family engagement, and mental health.
CIS counselors are embedded in MISD campuses supporting our students everyday.

Do you know about Job Corps in East McKinney?
A FREE residential career training and education program for low-income young people ages 16–24

The program is run by the U.S. Department of Labor and has been operating for 60 years. Job Corps helps participants improve their job skills, find vocational direction, and complete their high school education. The program also assists participants in obtaining employment and becoming independent
North Texas Job Corps offers hands-on training in Healthcare, Construction (carpentry, masonry, plumbing, HVAC, Electrical), culinary arts, Homeland Security and more.

Everything takes place on our Volunteer Portal. You can browse opportunities without an account, but you’ll need to register and create a profile to actually respond to an opportunity.
If you don’t see anything that fits your interest and schedule, check back later as opportunities are always being added. You can also Become a Fan of any agency to get updates on their needs.
Each agency will have their own process for accepting volunteers to make sure you are a good fit for them.
